Researcher: Umbreen Yousaf
Research area, purpose, and research question:
The overall cancer mortality in Greenland has been shown to be higher than the other Nordic countries. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in Greenland. This is a retrospective observational study investigating the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with lung cancer diagnosed during 1987-2023. The information will be obtained from medical records in Greenland. This study will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer as well as outcomes after lung cancer in Greenland. There is a local need to better understand the clinical course of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is an advantage that the study is being carried out at the main hospital in Greenland with understanding of the local practices and conditions. The purpose with this study is to get closer to finding causes for the high mortality, being able to do interventions, and thus help improve the survival among lung cancer patients.
Methods for capacity building in Greenland:
This study will contribute to the availability of Greenlandic cancer data for society and increase the transparency of the healthcare system. The study will provide the healthcare system with data they can use to improve the entire lung cancer process in the country. The study will also make the population aware of the symptoms they should respond to and seek medical attention for.
