Questionnaire survey on social trust and trust in institutions

Questionnaire survey on social trust and trust in institutions

Researcher: Najaaraq Demant-Poort

Research area, purpose and research question:
The purpose of the project is to carry out a nationwide telephone questionnaire survey on social trust and trust in political institutions and administrative institutions in Greenland.

International research confirms connections between the individual’s quality of life and trust in our fellow human beings and social institutions. But what does it look like in Greenland, where social institutions according to the Nordic model have been established through colonization, and are often up for debate? This can be elucidated, among other things, through data of the type collected in the project.

The telephone survey allows for a broad representation of respondents distributed across the country and in all age groups. It is also a method where the physical and digital distance between interviewer and respondent ensures a degree of anonymity, which can be decisive in a small, close-knit society like ours.

The project is an independent data collection with 100 per cent. anchoring in Greenland. The work takes place in Nuuk, based on Ilisimatusarfik. It is an important part of the project to involve Greenlandic youth in the data collection through employment as hourly paid student assistants. It will give them knowledge, experience and methodological knowledge in practice, and skills in carrying out investigative work, which they will be able to benefit from in their own studies and in their working life later on.
