Marine life around Greenland depends on tiny organisms that produce energy and form the foundation of ocean ecosystems. Most people are familiar with phytoplankton, microscopic algae that use sunlight to produce energy in surface waters. However, in the dark depths of the ocean, other organisms can produce energy without sunlight by using chemical processes. These processes, which often occur near hydrothermal vents on the seafloor, are still poorly understood in Greenland waters.
This project will investigate how these different energy-producing systems are connected in the ocean off East Greenland. The researchers will measure the amount of phytoplankton in surface waters and study how processes in deeper and darker parts of the ocean contribute to the overall production of food and nutrients in the marine ecosystem. The project will also explore potential hydrothermal vent systems on the seafloor and identify the microorganisms that live there.
The research will be carried out using a research vessel where scientists will collect water samples, map the seafloor, and study marine life in surface waters, deep waters, and on the seabed. The results will provide new knowledge about how marine ecosystems function and how they may be affected by climate change and potential future seabed mineral extraction.
The project will generate important knowledge that can support the protection of marine ecosystems and help ensure sustainable management of Greenland’s marine resources. The results will be shared with researchers, authorities, and the public through education, public outreach activities, and accessible communication materials.
