Greenland and Switzerland in new research cooperation on natural hazards

Today, Greenland’s Minister of Finances, Mineral Resources, Justice and Equality, Naaja Nathanielsen opened the Konrad Steffen Workshop on natural hazards in Greenland.

8 March 2022

This week, The Swiss Polar Institute and Greenland Research Council are discussing how Swiss expertise can support the monitoring and risk assessment of natural hazards in Greenland. The collaboration builds on the legacy of Konrad Steffen who tragically died at Swiss Camp in Greenland in 2020. Today, 12 experts on natural hazards in Switzerland met with experts from Greenland to discuss research needs and actions necessary in mitigating natural hazards in Greenland such as landslides and avalanches. Participants range from early career scientists to professors, professionals from companies and representatives from the government and society.

Chair of Greenland Research Council Josephine Nymand says:

We hope that our new collaboration can help facilitate long-term capacity building around natural hazards management in Greenland. Our Swiss colleagues are well-experienced in this field, and international research cooperation is crucial for Greenland in the development of national monitoring systems and mitigation plans for natural hazards.
