Ved for f\u00f8rste gang, at kombinere metoder anvendt til aldersbestemmelse af andre hvaler (aspartat racemisering) med en nyudviklet metode anvendt p\u00e5 gr\u00f8nlandshaj (kulstof 14-datering), vil vi komme med et valideret estimat af pukkelhvalernes levealder.<\/p>\n<p>Aspartat racemisering tager udgangspunkt i et protein i hvalens \u00f8je. Proteinet omdannes med tiden fra en s\u00e5kaldt L-form til en D-form. Idet man har kendskab til temperaturen i hvalens \u00f8je, kan man udregne hvor lang tid (alder), der m\u00e5 v\u00e6re g\u00e5et for at n\u00e5 frem til forholdet mellem de to former, da hvalen blev fanget.<\/p>\n<p>Ligeledes fra hvalens \u00f8je, kan man analysere m\u00e6ngden af radioaktivt kulstof. Den inderste kerne i \u00f8jets linse, dannes i fosterstadiet, og dens sammens\u00e6tning \u00e6ndres ikke i hvalens levetid. Ud fra kendskab til udviklingen af kulstofm\u00e6ngden i havet, kan man derfor fastsl\u00e5 det mest sandsynlige tidspunkt for hvalens f\u00f8dsel, og dermed alder.<\/p>\n<p>Metodekombinationen er helt unik.
