At m\u00e6ngden af tabte langliner, garn, tejner, trawlwire og andet affald, er til stor gene for fiskeriet, er der dog n\u00e6ppe tvivl om. I Gr\u00f8nland findes der ingen kvantitative unders\u00f8gelser af affald p\u00e5 havbunden, men mange uafh\u00e6ngige observationer antyder, at tabte garn kan lede til et betydeligt og uset sp\u00f8gelsesfiskeri. Internationale unders\u00f8gelser har vist, at tabte garn kan opretholde en fiskeeffektivitet p\u00e5 op til 20 % i lange perioder og potentiel i \u00e5revis. Sp\u00f8gelsesfiskeri foreg\u00e5r, n\u00e5r et redskab mistes og ikke opfiskes igen. Fisk bliver s\u00e5 fanget og tiltr\u00e6kker i den forbindelse bl.a. krabber, som ogs\u00e5 fanges i garnet og g\u00e5r til. Garnfiskeri p\u00e5 dybere vand efter hellefisk foreg\u00e5r i stor stil og kan v\u00e6re problematisk. Det skyldes, at garnene p\u00e5 dybt vand ikke p\u00e5virkes af tidevand, b\u00f8lger, tang og isfjelde, og derfor kan blive ved med at fiske. Processen kaldes sp\u00f8gelsesfiskeri og kan lede til et betydeligt tab for bestandene, erhvervet og samfundet. I dag er der dog ingen viden om, hvor store m\u00e6ngder af affald, der ligger p\u00e5 bunden.
