Mental health disorders are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Within the Kingdom of Denmark – which includes Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands – the number of psychiatric hospital admissions and outpatient visits has also steadily increased in recent years.
\nAlthough these three countries share citizenship and a publicly funded healthcare system, Greenland and the Faroe Islands independently organize and regulate healthcare services, including rehabilitation, under the Home Rule Act. This means there are differences in how rehabilitation for mental health disorders is organized and coordinated across the Kingdom of Denmark.
\nPeople with mental health disorders often need support after leaving the hospital to regain their ability to function and become more independent. Rehabilitation aims to help them manage physical and mental challenges, establish daily routines, build social connections, and access to education and work. Research shows that access to wellcoordinated rehabilitation can reduce the risk of hospital readmission and helps people return to everyday life with improved functioning and independence.
\nDespite these benefits, access to mental health rehabilitation services varies considerably within the Kingdom of Denmark due to differences in legislation, healthcare systems and services delivery. For example, Denmark has laws that guarantee rehabilitation plans and discharge agreements based on a doctor\u2019s assessment, while Greenland and the Faroe Islands do not have similar laws. This results in fragmented rehabilitation services and difficulties in coordinating support when patients transition from hospital treatment to communitybased services.
\nThis project aims to explore and compare how laws and healthcare systems influences the use of rehabilitation services for people with mental health disorders in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. By involving healthcare professionals and decisionmakers, this project will identify barriers and opportunities to improve rehabilitation services across the three countries.
\nThe research will include analyses of legislation and policies, interviews, and registry data on rehabilitation usage after psychiatric hospital discharge. It will also examine whether usage varies by sociodemographic factors and whether rehabilitation reduces the risk of hospital readmission.
\nThe project works closely with partners from hospitals and municipalities in all three countries to ensure the results are relevant and useful. Ultimately, the projects has the potential to provide clear recommendations to improve the coordination, quality, and access of mental health rehabilitation services across the Kingdom of Denmark. These insights aims to support future policymaking by highlighting necessary legal and structural changes to promote equal access to rehabilitation in these countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
