Projektets forskningsområde, formål og forskningsspørgsmål:
Last time (2010) the marine-terminating glacier Narsap Sermia experienced a substantial glacial ice discharge during winter, the discharge was followed by a mean front position movement of more than 3 km. The winter 2021 was characterized by substantial glacial ice discharge so the question is if a similar movement will happen again. The overall goal of this research project is to follow the Sikkusak (ice mélange) adjacent to the marine-terminating
glacier Narsap Sermia in Nuup Kangerlua and the movement of the glacier front, which retreated substantially in recent years. The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) has previously studied Narsap Sermia by land based time-lapse cameras and fjord observations at a distance > 7 km due to presence of dense ice mélange. New drone technology now allows us to survey the entire ice mélange right up to the glacier front. We will use this technology in the present study together with the more classical approaches. Besides being an important contribution to the ongoing climate research in Nuup Kangerlua, the research project will involve the local community (through social media linked to an internet homepage), build local knowledge (drone experience and new scientific knowledge), and promote research in Greenland and internationally.
