Globalt er der mange forladte miner der forurener milj\u00f8et. Derfor er der behov for en bedre forst\u00e5else af de forvitringsprocesser, der f\u00f8rer til milj\u00f8forurening, som kan bruges i at etablere passende trin i reducering af metalforurening fra mineaffald. Is\u00e6r med den potentielle fremtidige udvikling af mineaktiviteter i de arktiske lande, vil det v\u00e6re gavnligt at kunne forst\u00e5 processerne i de arktiske klimaforhold, b\u00e5de under udnyttelse og efter mine nedlukning. Dette tv\u00e6rfaglige ph.d.-projekt unders\u00f8ger forvitringsprocesser fra den forladte Ivittuut kryolit-mine i Sydgr\u00f8nland. Baseret p\u00e5 mineralogiske unders\u00f8gelser af mineraler dannet ved forvitringen af gr\u00e5bjerg \u2019\u2019waste rock\u2019\u2019\/mineaffald, og kort- og langvarige udvaskningseksperimenter i de gr\u00f8nlandske klimaforhold, vil vi kunne aflede kemiske processer og dokumentere den potentielle udvaskning af tunge metaller og andre milj\u00f8forurenende stoffer fra gr\u00e5bjerg ved Ivittuut. De prim\u00e6re metaller der bliver fokuseret p\u00e5, er bly (Pb), zink (Zn), samt fluor (F). Fluor er ikke blevet unders\u00f8gt f\u00f8r ved Ivittuut. Sp\u00f8rgsm\u00e5l, der skal besvares af dette projekt, omfatter: Kan sekund\u00e6re mineraler \u00e6ndre de prim\u00e6re mineralers forvitringsadf\u00e6rd? Er fluor der bliver udledt fra gr\u00e5bjerg milj\u00f8skadeligt? Har fluor en effekt p\u00e5 udvaskning af metaller og andre forurenende stoffer fra gr\u00e5bjerg og dets transport i milj\u00f8? For at besvare disse sp\u00f8rgsm\u00e5l vil in-situ udvaskningseksperimenter blive brugt til at simulere mineralforvitring og for at studere udvaskning af tunge metaller og andre forurenede stoffer fra gr\u00e5bjerg ved Ivittuut. Analyserne vil vise hvor stabile de prim\u00e6re og sekundere mineraler er, under de arktiske klimaforholde. Vejlederne har forskellige baggrunde, der d\u00e6kker for projektets tv\u00e6rfaglige aspekter (bl.a., mineralogi, geokemi, milj\u00f8videnskab). M\u00e5let og relevans af dette tv\u00e6rfaglige projekt er todelt. F\u00f8rst, vil det give os meget bedre forst\u00e5else af kemiske processer under forvitringsprocesser i Ivittuut, is\u00e6r udledningen af metaller, fluor, og andre forurenende stoffer. Sidst, vil resultaterne af projektet udvide den meget begr\u00e6nsede viden om forvitringsprocesser i det arktiske milj\u00f8 og f\u00f8re til anbefalinger om, hvordan mineaffald b\u00f8r h\u00e5ndteres og beskyttes mod forvitring.
