Den v\u00e6sentligste del af havpattedyrenes fysiske aktivitet foreg\u00e5r under dykningen n\u00e5r de sv\u00f8mmer eller glider ned i dybet, skal fange bytte eller m\u00e5 sv\u00f8mme tilbage til overfladen. Det er modsat alle landlevende dyr som \u00f8ger antallet af hjerteslag og udvider blodkarrene under fysisk aktivitet p\u00e5 land. Havpattedyrenes fald i hjerteslagsrytmen under dyk fungerer som en \u2018k\u00e6mpe kontakt\u2019 der forhindrer blodtilf\u00f8rsel til de fleste organer og stopper al un\u00f8dvendigt iltforbrug. Unders\u00f8gelser af hjerteslagsrytmen har dog v\u00e6ret begr\u00e6nset til s\u00e6ler eller til hvaler som i fangenskab er dykket til relativt lave dybder.
