Ud over at v\u00e6re omg\u00e6rdet af myter og kulturel betydning rummer tanden en helt s\u00e6rlig egenskab: den fungerer som et biologisk arkiv, der gemmer detaljeret information om narhvalens liv, dens f\u00f8de, stressniveau og det milj\u00f8, den har levet i \u2013 \u00e5r for \u00e5r.<\/p>\n<p>Narhvalens tand vokser hele livet og danner \u00e5rlige v\u00e6kstlag, ligesom \u00e5rringe i et tr\u00e6. I hvert lag lagres kemiske spor fra hvalens omgivelser, herunder isotoper og hormoner. Ved at analysere disse lag kan forskere rekonstruere b\u00e5de individets livshistorie og st\u00f8rre milj\u00f8- og klima\u00e6ndringer i de arktiske havomr\u00e5der gennem \u00e5rtier.<\/p>\n<p>Dette projekt bygger videre p\u00e5 flere \u00e5rs forskning i narhvalst\u00e6nder og udvider de eksisterende tidsserier med nye t\u00e6nder fra Nordgr\u00f8nland. S\u00e6rligt v\u00e6rdifuldt er materiale fra en narhvalpopulation nord for Inglefield Bredning, som forskere ved meget lidt om, men som lokale fangere kan genkende som anderledes i b\u00e5de adf\u00e6rd og kropsform. Projektet kombinerer disse nye data med tidligere indsamlede t\u00e6nder og skaber en samlet tidsserie, der str\u00e6kker sig fra slutningen af 1950\u2019erne til i dag.<\/p>\n<p>Ved at analysere stabile isotoper kan forskerne unders\u00f8ge \u00e6ndringer i narhvalens f\u00f8devalg over tid, mens analyser af stresshormonet kortisol giver indsigt i, hvordan hvalerne reagerer p\u00e5 milj\u00f8forandringer. Tidligere resultater fra \u00d8stgr\u00f8nland peger p\u00e5, at narhvaler i de seneste \u00e5rtier b\u00e5de har \u00e6ndret f\u00f8de og oplevet \u00f8get stress i takt med stigende havtemperaturer, mindre havis og \u00f8kologiske \u00e6ndringer i havet. Dette projekt skal unders\u00f8ge, om lignende \u00e6ndringer ogs\u00e5 kan ses hos narhvalerne i Nordvestgr\u00f8nland.<\/p>\n<p>Projektet gennemf\u00f8res i t\u00e6t samarbejde med lokale fangere, Gr\u00f8nlands Naturinstitut, internationale forskningspartnere og studerende ved Gr\u00f8nlands Universitet. Resultaterne vil blive formidlet gennem videnskabelige publikationer og delt med den gr\u00f8nlandske befolkning via sociale medier og nyhedsmedier. P\u00e5 den m\u00e5de bidrager projektet b\u00e5de til ny viden om klimaets p\u00e5virkning af Arktis og til en bedre forst\u00e5else af en art, som har stor kulturel og samfundsm\u00e6ssig betydning
